    Just to keep you in the loop so to speak, It looks like I have got me a job out in Hampshire. If all works out for me I intend to do my best to move out of London and get a place down there to live and retire. Let you know how it goes. This is a great series of videos. I just picked up a ‘78 xl250s with totally buggered final drive - no splines on the sprocket end. So need to replace the final drive. I’ve never opened up a case like this so am curious if I have to remove clutch basket, flywheel, etc like you did. Or if once the top end is off and and side covers and bolts removed I can just split it and put the new (used) final drive in.

    Any advice on removing the bottom cover of timing belt. Especially the bolt right next to alternator. It seems to be just spinning without anything happening.

  • @hermanbotha1449
    @hermanbotha1449 18 днів тому

    ontop you gearbox bellhousing is an inspection hole , if you look throgh there with a flashlight you will see theres marks on your flywheel to line up the timing exactly and on the rear of the cam pulley is also a mark , line that up to be level with the very top of thecylinder head (on the back side) also have to make sure your tdc on the correct stroke for the distributer timing is not 180 deg out. this is easy to check by noting wich lead is from spark plug number 1 , pop off the dizzy cap and see that the rotor is pointing towards where you noted plug wire nr.1 is. Lastly , when you install the belt start on top , over clockwise down over the crank side pully , making sure theres no slack between the 2 pulleys on the front side , then keep that tension and slip over the rest of belt round bottem pulley , then you use your special tool to tension and then fasten the tensioner locking nut, you must take care not to let the belt slip and cause slack between the 2 pulleys like i explained , and tension it from the back . Very important !!! if you fit the belt the other way around, everything seems good but with sslack in front as soon as you tension the belt , the slack pulls tight and throws your timing out a tooth or 2 or 3 and trust me , a vw motor like that is very bitchy over just half a tooth out. just some tips from a guy who has done it 1000 times. lastly , i dont believe in that 90deg rotate trick on those belts. i tension it just a wee bit tighter than that. peace !!!!

    Great how to. Just followed it. One thing - to get the last air chamber in (one that goes to centre two vents) you can remove a small bracket under dash just to the left of steering wheel. 4 x 8mm bolts, with that out the way the chamber goes in easily. You'll need a long extension for 8mm as one is quite far into dash

    Not seen any other of your vids but the fact that the seal came off again 'easily' begs the questions how easily did the old ones come off, and did the new ones stay on after you started the engine? As far as I was aware, the inlet suction in the chamber is sufficient to easily pop off any inlet seal not securely fitted behind a lip on the guide designed for this very purpose. I would have thought that once a seal is correctly and securely fitted behind any such guide lip, subsequently removing it would instantly destroy it in the same way the collet lip of the valve stem does on fitting that (and why a 'condom' is supplied in the kit). Obviously, once blown off, all oil above the valve gear has free passage through the valve guide and into the chamber, potentially creating a 'Gotham City-look' to the entire neighbourhood once the engine's running.

      I'm confident that the seals are still in their intended positions as after over 6000 miles, there is no oil loss and dip stick levels remain very consistent. the exhaust only smells of unburnt fuel rather than the distinctive smell of lubricating oils. I agree that my error was less than optimal but the new seals were very pliable compared to the rock solid originals. They also had lubricant to help ease the passage of the seals onto the guide. Every job I do is a new learning experience.

      Sorry, it's been so long that I don't remember.
